Mandatory Liability Insurance before you can even get a FOID Card?? (click on phote for link) Why am I not surprised that this bill was introduced by a senator from Chicago? His proposed bill mandates that all who have a FOID card or are applying for a FOID card be able to show that they have a minimum of $100,000 worth of liability insurance. One can only speculate how this Senator justified in his mind that this bill even makes sense. Anyone that has taken our Concealed Carry Class knows that we highly suggest purchasing liability insurance once you obtain your Concealed Carry Permit to protect yourself in the event that you do have to use your firearm to defend yourself. Chances are, if you do, it is highly likely that you will be sued, either by the person whom you fired upon or by the estate of that person if you mortally wound him or her. Even if you are defending yourself justifiably, you can be sued and could potentially lose everything you have worked hard for your entire life. But I think requiring everyone that simply has a FOID to have mandatory insurance is crazy! There are so many people that simply have FOID cards because there are guns in the house that belong to their spouse or other family members. Those people aren't ever going to even pick up the firearm, much less use it. This bill is yet another example of a Chicago politician that simply does not have a clue.
Please be aware that as of Jan 1, 2014, IL will require all firearm purchasers to have completed background checks prior to purchasing a firearm. This will include private transfers of firearms. The new law will also immediately put into effect that gun owners will have a legal obligation to report lost or stolen firearms to local law enforcement authorities within 72 hours.
